Adventure is the last thing on Andrea Henderson's mind when she moves to Moses Lake. After surviving the worst year of her life, she's struggling to build a new life for herself and her son as a social worker. Perhaps in doing a job that makes a difference, she can find some sense of purpose and solace in her shattered faith.
For new Moses Lake game warden Mart McClendon, finding a sense of purpose in life isn't an issue. He took the job to get out of southwest Texas and the constant reminders of a tragedy for which he can't forgive himself.
But when a little girl is seen with the town recluse, Mart and Andrea are drawn together in the search for her identity. The little girl offers them both a new chance at redemption and hope—and may bring them closer than either ever planned.

A decent read from a decent writer may be faint praise, but readers will enjoy Wingate's story of goings-on in tiny Moses Lake, Tex. Following a heartbreaking divorce, Andrea Henderson and her son, Dustin, are in the town where Andrea spent childhood summers. She is trying to build a career as a social worker as her son struggles to fit in. They meet game warden Mart McClendon when Dustin gets in trouble on the lake, but there is more to the handsome game warden than meets the eye. Andrea and Mart are thrown together when they discover a little girl living with the town recluse. As the mystery of the child slowly resolves, Mart and Andrea's relationship becomes closer. Can they overcome their pasts to reach for a new future? They face more than relationship questions when the girl's mother shows up with her renegade friends. A nice tale to enjoy in front of a roaring winter fire.

Following a tumultuous year and the loss of her faith, Andrea Henderson moves with her son to Moses Lake, TX, where she plans to earn a living as a social worker. There, she meets game warden Mart McClendon, who is also trying to forget past tragedies. Pairing up to identify a young girl spotted with the town recluse, the two discover that a tattered past and their investigation are not the only things connecting them. VERDICT Wingate's (Beyond Summer; Never Say Never) latest novel is an engaging tale with touches of mystery and romance. For readers who enjoy contemporary romances with Christian undertones.

Andrea Henderson, now a single mother, has moved to Moses Lake with her adolescent son, Dustin, who seems drawn to trouble. Andreas new job as a social worker is hard enough, but her clients are scattered throughout a rugged terrain. Game warden Mart McClendon is in charge of Moses Lake and the surrounding area. He first meets Andrea when he catches Dustin doing dangerous stunts at the lake with his new buddies. Wingates faith-based novel chronicles the relationship of a mother who has to start again, the man who comes to love her, and her son. Readers will enjoy the folksy sayings written on the Wall of Wisdom at the Waterbird Bait and Grocery that begin each chapter. Wingates attention to detail, her poignant depictions of her characters, and her lyrical writing style make this book a draw for fans of contemporary and inspirational novels.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
