The New York Times bestselling author of The Next Mrs. Parrish delivers another spellbinding story of betrayal and deceit in this audiobook original, Everybody Is a Liar.

When Julie Buckley, a successful mystery writer, suspects her husband of cheating, she turns to her best friend, Darby, for advice. When Darby suggests couples therapy, Julie and Oliver find themselves discussing Oliver’s betrayal with their new therapist, Liza. Liza is competent and reassuring, and her advice and Oliver’s openness to change seem to be helping the couple rebuild their relationship.

But when murder strikes in this small Connecticut town, Liza begins to worry there is a connection between Oliver and another one of her patients and the confidences they have shared with her become the key to solving the murder. As Liza digs deeper, she comes to believe that everybody is a liar.

An ensemble cast gives voice to Liv Constantine's audiobook original, which is part soap opera, part psychological thriller. Jennifer Jill Araya, as narrator, sets the scene with her gentle voice and unhurried pacing. Saskia Maarleveld portrays Julie, the scorned wife, with brisk, barely controlled anger focused on her cheating husband, Oliver, played with emotional intensity by Dallis Seeker. Shayr Guthrie brings energy to her performance as Julie's neighbor and best friend, Darby. Barrie Kreinik as Liza, the marriage counselor who weaves together many divergent elements as events unfold, performs with somber tones and a deliberate cadence. Danny Campbell has a brief role as an attorney. Pauses between chapters are often much too long, but, overall, this is an entertaining interlude. S.G. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine

Mystery writer Julie Buckley seeks couples counseling with her husband, Oliver, at the suggestion of her friend Darby. Liza, the therapist recommended by Darby, takes their case; in the sessions, they discuss Oliver's infidelity. Then Julie turns up dead, and though Oliver maintains his innocence, he is the prime suspect. As Liza hears more about the crime, she realizes it's much more complicated than it seems and suspects that no one can be trusted. Constantine (The Next Mrs. Parrish) has written a fast-paced, twist-filled domestic thriller. The audio is narrated by an ensemble cast, featuring Jennifer Jill Araya as the narrator, Barrie Kreinik as questioning, quick-witted Liza, Saskia Maarleveld as betrayed wife Julie, Shayr Guthrie as Julie's stalwart friend Darby, Dallis Seeker as duplicitous Oliver, and Danny Campbell, who has a small role as an attorney. The ensemble cast captures the many sides to this story--the tense atmosphere, the double- and triple-crosses, and the twist at the end. VERDICT Listeners won't know whom to trust or if they can trust anyone at all. Constantine's many fans will love this new thriller.--Elyssa Everling
