School Library Journal
June 1, 2013
Gr 2-5-Many children dream of working with animals. Other youngsters will be drawn to careers as community helpers, especially as first responders. These titles identify two careers through which young people can pursue both interests. The well-designed books contain heartwarming stories of daring animal rescues across the United States and across animal species. Large, attractive photos and sidebars with facts are effectively interwoven into the texts. Information is also provided about job training, duties, and equipment. Solid additions for most collections.-Caroline Geck, Camden Street School Library, Newark, NJ

Grades 3-5 There are more animal series out there than you can shake a stick insect at. But these new titles in The Work of Heroes: First Responders in Action series offer a fresh angle on human-wildlife interaction. Animal Control Officers to the Rescue begins with a story that went viral in 2008: Porter, a Labrador, fell through pond ice, and his tense, drawn-out rescue was captured on video. Once readers catch their breath, they'll learn about the wild, varied careers of such responders, from helping abused animals and patrolling the streets for strays to capturing dangerous creatures, many of which could have rabies. Though one story details a pit bull attack on an officer, the tone is generally nonthreatening, and the photographs (like a beaver held by its tail from a snare pole) are great. The books bolster their intrinsic interest with action photos, a fine mix of anecdotes and hard info, constant fact boxes, and wonderful closing spreads detailing the tools of the trade. High-interest material, well handled.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2013, American Library Association.) -
The Horn Book

These books cover the training and responsibilities of animal rescue workers. The page design is uninspired, but the photos enhance the accessible texts, which include details about routine as well as extraordinary incidents, notable rescues, and firsthand accounts. A final spread covers equipment. Readers interested in working with animals will find these volumes useful resources. Reading list.
