How did the great scientists make their remarkable discoveries? And what kind of men were they? This companion volume to Inventors and their Inventions introduces the work of ten men to younger readers, and range from the world of Ancient Greece to the twentieth century discovery of DNA. Among them are the crucial discovery that the earth goes around the sun (Galileo), the principle of gravity (Newton), the evolution of the species (Darwin) and the principle of inherited characteristics or genetics (Mendel).

After listening to David Angus's work, the listener cannot help but give consideration to the notion that science involves an interconnectedness among scientists themselves, in addition to observation and measurement. The work covers scientists from various periods in history--from Aristotle to Isaac Newton to Albert Einstein to Watson and Crick. Angus presents those whose generosity was immense, such as Faraday, who did not patent the dynamo so that others could build upon his work; and those whose observational skills were profound, such as Watson, who intuited the structure of DNA from trial models. Clare Corbett and Benjamin Soames narrate conversationally, making the information vibrant. The quick pace never drags but may necessitate additional listens. A.R. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine
