UZBEKISTAN Finding Big Water in the Desert • The -stan countries of Central Asia are lands of contrast and scale: jagged, snow-covered mountains, high plateaus, and deep valleys carved by rivers that cut through desert and steppe. Kayakers have come chasing the local Triple Crown—the Muksu, the Sarydzhaz, and the Bashkaus—three of the region’s most demanding runs. Yet the -stans still hold rivers that few have seen or run. One of them is the Oygaying in Uzbekistan, a beautiful river that was long off-limits to international paddlers. With travel restrictions easing in recent years, it was finally time for kayakers to explore this valley again. In August, Mike Krutyansky and photographer David Sodomka joined a crew to see what they would find.
KVENNA WHEN VALHALLA OPENED • This summer, Eirik Hansen, Mario Leitner, Kilian Ivelic, and David Sodomka set out on a mission in western Norway’s Hardangervidda National Park, a barren, treeless expanse scattered with countless lakes and short river sections. When the stars aligned and ideal conditions came together, the crew didn’t hesitate to extend their trip by three days to explore the Kvenna River system. Eirik recounts their quest across Europe’s largest plateau in search of the whitewater he first scouted three years prior, and what felt like a rare opening in the Norse heavens.
